Graduate Program in Art Education

The graduate program in art education currently offers five degrees. At the doctoral level, the programs offered are: the Ph.D. in Art Education and the dual degree Ph.D. in Art Education and Women's Studies. At the master's level, the M.S. in Art Education and the dual degree M.S. in Art Education and Women's Studies, and the online M.P.S. in Art Education is offered.

Doctoral Degrees

Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Art Education
The Ph.D. in Art Education prepares students to become innovative researchers, informed educators, and leaders in higher education, schools, communities, and museums. Ph.D. candidates design original research projects that make significant contributions to art education theory and practice.  Coursework in art education and related disciplines such as philosophy, curriculum and instruction, sociology, anthropology, and other fields provides necessary theoretical and methodological background for dissertation research.

Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Art Education and Women's Studies
The dual degree Ph.D. in Art Education and Women's Studies is one of the few programs in the country to offer an interdisciplinary academic research degree in these two fields. Candidates for the dual-title degree conduct original research projects that make significant contributions to the field of art education, with particular attention to feminist perspectives and pedagogy.  Coursework in art education, women's studies, and related disciplines provide a strong theoretical and methodological background for dissertation research.

Master's Degree

The Master of Science Degree in Art Education

The M.S. degree program in art education is oriented toward research and culminates in a thesis. A Dual-Title Degree: The Master of Science Degree in Art Education and Women's Studies

The online Master of Professional Studies (M.P.S.) in Art Education is for professional art educators working at various sites throughout the world. It is for those who would like to improve their skills and knowledge as practicing art educators, and thus the culminating project is action-research. An action-research approach encourages practitioners to study their pedagogical practice and utilize what they learn to enact actions intended to improve art education practice.

Graduate Program Orientation and Resource Site

The Penn State Art Education Graduate Program Orientation and Resource site, at http://www.personal.psu.edu/ktk2/blogs/aed_grads/, is developed by current graduate students. It includes an overview of current graduate student research and links to their research blogs, as well as resources on teaching and research, and an orientation to activities at Penn State such as interdisciplinary reading and writing groups.

THE SEVENTH ANNUAL GRADUATE RESEARCH IN ART EDUCATION (GRAE) CONFERENCE will be at Penn State on November 4-5, 2011.
