2017 First Year M.F.A. Exhibition 5irst

P5irst, presented by first-year Master of Fine Arts candidates Ming Feng, Bradley Klem, Holly Veenis, Terry Young and Zexi Zhang, surveys important works produced by these artists during their first year of study at the university.  Traveling from different countries, states and cities to attend the MFA program at Penn State presented a unique set of challenges and opportunities idiosyncratic to each artist’s life and studio practice.  Being a student provides the opportunity for commonality experienced collectively by each artist, yet the title of ‘graduate student’ bestows a new reflection of the self experienced in those immediately closest to each artist (now student). 

5irst assumes no thematic dogma, but rather includes diverse work from distinct areas of study within the M.F.A. program:  Graphic Design, Ceramics, Photography, Sculpture and New Media.  The artists invite viewers from likewise disparate backgrounds and interests to celebrate in the exhibition experience: to enjoy the language of presentation and display as an alternate form of communication amongst the majority, yet a language innate (and currency of import) to an artistic few...
