"I was pushing myself to explore surface decoration with slip, treating each piece as both a three dimensional object, and as a canvas. I was really inspired by abstract expressionists like Franz Kline and Jackson Pollock. The goal was to evoke as much emotion and drama possible in a only few well-placed marks. For me it was really a study in painting as much as in ceramics. I was also really inspired by Russian Constructivism, notably in my color palette but also in altering my forms. In altering my ceramic pieces, I thought a lot about balance, composition, energy and movement. "
