got to be good looking cause he’s so hard to see M.F.A. Thesis exhibition by Penelope Van Grinsven is a show with two focuses: 1. the history of ceramics (questioning why and how certain stories are recorded) and 2. the ceremonial power of ceramic objects (tapping in to clay’s symbolic attributes of permanence, inheritance, and its profound connection with the everyday). The show’s title riffs on lore of the Beatle’s disillusionment upon meeting a revered yogi ultimately revealed to have a sexist agenda. Re-examining and reinventing parts of ceramic history, often through a feminist lens, this work questions the difficulty of seeing - both literally and metaphorically.
