Areas of Study

The Penn State School of Visual Arts' unique programs offer three areas of study: Studio Art, Art Education and Interdisciplinary Digital Studio (iDS). These areas provide study for every interest at the undergraduate and graduate degree levels. SoVA programs are built on the belief that curriculum development is a continually changing process that takes place in a community context, whereby ‘curriculum is community.’ The assumption is that visual arts and design teaching and learning has the capacity to increase individual cultural agency by emphasizing the importance of creative and critical thinking across the curriculum. SoVA’s curriculum principles of content creation, responsive instruction, and authentic assessment, are embedded in all areas of study and embraced in our online courses and outreach programs.
